Lombok Marathon postponed over eruption
Lombok Marathon organizers have postponed this year’s event as a result of the eruption of Mount Agung in Bali.
The event, now scheduled for Jan. 28, was initially set to run on Dec. 3.
Indonesian Sports Committee (KONI) West Nusa Tenggara head Andy Hadianto said that, following the eruption, local authorities shut down several airports, including Lombok International Airport, preventing participants from entering the island.
Runners from 18 countries, including Japan, Kenya and the United States, had registered for the marathon.
The organizers targeted 5,000 participants from 20 countries worldwide.
“The total prize money is Rp 500 million [US$US$37,037],” Andy said as quoted by Antara.
The annual event was certified by the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) and the Association of International Marathons and Road Races (AIMS).
